The PBX debate has been going on for a decade, and there's still no single right answer — just the right answer for your business. Let's cut through the noise.
What's the Core Difference?
On-premise PBX means the hardware lives in your office (or data center). You own it, you manage it, your IT team updates it. Examples: Asterisk, FreePBX, Cisco CUCM.
Cloud PBX means the phone system lives in someone else's data center. You access it over the internet, and they handle all the hardware, updates, and uptime. Examples: Talktelx Cloud PBX, 3CX hosted, RingCentral.
The Case for On-Premise
- Full control over configuration and security
- No ongoing SaaS fees (after the initial hardware investment)
- Works even if your internet goes down (for internal calls)
- Better for highly regulated industries with strict data residency requirements
- Can be deeply customized for complex call flows
The Case for Cloud PBX
- Zero hardware to buy, rack, or maintain
- Set up in hours, not weeks
- Automatic updates and security patches
- Remote-work ready from day one
- Scales instantly as you grow
- No IT staff required to run it
Cost Comparison (Honest Version)
On-premise has high upfront costs (hardware, licenses, installation) and lower ongoing costs. Cloud PBX has low upfront costs and predictable monthly fees. For most businesses under 100 seats, cloud PBX is cheaper on a 3-year total cost basis. For larger organizations that already have IT infrastructure, on-premise can win — but it depends heavily on your specific setup.
A Hybrid Option
Many of Talktelx's customers run a hybrid: they have an existing on-premise PBX (Asterisk, FreePBX, or Cisco) that they've invested in, and they connect it to our SIP trunking service. This gives them the control of on-premise with the flexibility and cost savings of VoIP. It's often the best of both worlds.
Which Should You Choose?
- Startup or SMB, no IT team → Cloud PBX
- Existing PBX investment you want to keep → SIP Trunking
- Large enterprise with strict compliance needs → On-Premise + SIP Trunks
- Fully remote team → Cloud PBX
